This twelve week series will kick off our Fall season with a study through the ten commandments. Again Moses is setting these ten words (Roman numeral X) as the laws God requires for the lives of his people. Thousands of years and a few deserts later, these laws tell those in the 21st century how to live.
September 7 - Start with God – “I am” (Deut. 5:1-6) The first commandment is that upon which all the following are built. If God really is God, then following His laws is the only option for those who want to please Him.
September 14 - No gods before me/no graven image (Deut. 5:7-10) This sermon will combine commandments two and three and give some specifics on exactly what idolatry is.
September 21 - The name of the Lord (Deut. 5:11) The Name above all names is the subject of this teaching. How do we handle God’s name and what should we do and not do with it?
September 28 - Sabbath (Deut. 5:12-15) This will be a bit of a refresher from our Sabbath series in April/May, but it will still be a necessary message for an overworked, overstressed society desperately in need of rest.
October 5 - Honor Father and Mother (Deut. 5:16) Honor is lacking in our culture and in our homes. We will teach that it is God’s desire for us to honor our parents.
October 12 - Do not murder (Deut. 5:17) This sermon will look at all of the implications of taking another’s life.
October 19 - Do not commit adultery (Deut. 5:18) In a day when sexual promiscuity is encouraged; this message will uphold the sanctity of the marriage bed.
October 26 - Do not steal (Deut. 5:19) This teaching is about not stealing (duh!)
November 2 - Do not bear false witness (Deut. 5:20) In this sermon we will look at how much of our talk may fall into the category of being false. We are called in Christ to speak the truth in love.
November 9 - Do not covet (Deut. 5:21) Again, a command that confronts the world in which we live: one that wants everything that everyone else has. This command will help us work on contentment.
November 16 - God’s wish (Deut. 5:23-29) At the end of this review, the people respond by saying they will live by these rules and God tells Moses, “If only they would.”
